Pregnancy Symptoms: "Yeast Infection"

A vaginal yeast infection is an irritation of the vagina and the area around it called the vulva.

It's normal to experience a significant increase in vaginal discharge during pregnancy. In fact, an increase in a thin, milky, mild-smelling discharge is so common it has a name: leukorrhea or even the overgrowth of a normal vaginal fungus called Candida albicans.

Yeast infections are a common complaint among pregnant women. The pH level in the body is very delicate, and during pregnancy, the yeast and acidic levels can easily become imbalanced leading to an overgrowth of yeast. This imbalance is usually the result of the increase in hormone levels and changes in diet that occur during pregnancy.

Common signs you're having a yeast infection

Symptoms may include:

  • Itchiness, irritation, soreness, burning, and redness in your vagina and labia (and sometimes swelling)
  • An odorless vaginal discharge that's often white, creamy, or cottage-cheesy
  • Discomfort or pain during sex
  • Burning when you urinate (when the urine hits your already irritated genitals)

It's less likely you'll get a yeast infection if you keep your genital area dry (yeast thrives in a warm, humid environment) and your vaginal flora in balance.

What can you do once you've noticed these symptoms?

I came to realise that yeast is fond of sugar. The more you drink or eat too sweet, the more they grow easily and make you feel miserable throughout your pregnancy. I didn't know about this years ago during my first pregnancy when the discharge was just awful and no matter the amount of nystatin suppositories I took, they still were able to come back.

The following tips will help you keep them in balance:

  • Reducing or avoiding sugar foods and starches can greatly lower your chances of experiencing yeast infections during pregnancy.
  • Eat bananas that will help control the amount of sugar in your body
  • Reduce bakeries, breads or flour products to a minimum
  • Drink more water
  • Take showers instead of baths
  • Wash the genital area with water only. If you must use a cleanser, use a mild unscented soap to cleanse the area
  • Dry yourself completely before getting dressed. Yeast flourishes in moist and dark environment
  • Try sleeping without underwear or pyjama bottoms at night.

Will a yeast infection affect my baby?

No, a yeast infection won't hurt or affect your developing baby.

However, If you suspect you have a yeast infection while pregnant, always seek your physician first for treatment. It is recommended to avoid over the counter treatment for yeast infections while pregnant. Also, getting enough rest while pregnant and avoiding stressful situations can be of help to lesser the effect of yeast.

Hoping these tips will help you in any way, have a safe and joyful pregnancy :)
